1. What is your research focus?
“IGF-1 signaling in acromegaly mimic zebrafish mediates loss of body stem cell self-renewal through p38 MAPK signaling and reduced autophagy”
2. What current project are you excited about?
Using zebrafish as a model for better understanding the pathogenesis of acromegaly disease and identification of targets for therapeutic intervention; especially focusing on excess growth hormone effects on stem cells number, integrity, and functionality.
3. How long have you been working with zebrafish?
I have been working with zebrafish for 3 years.

4. Where were you born/where did you grow up?
I was born and grew up in Alexandria, Egypt
5. When did you realize you wanted to have a career as a scientist? /What made you realize you wanted to have a career as a scientist?
Since undergraduate level. I excelled at the collection and presentation of scientific materials in scientific activities in our university (Alexandria University). It was fun for me, and from that time I wanted to work in the field that I liked and be a scientist.
6. Where did you do your undergraduate studies? Did you do research with anyone?
My undergraduate studies were at the faculty of veterinary medicine, Alexandria University, Egypt.
7. Where did you do graduate studies and with whom? What did you work on?
I got my master’s degree from the department of fish diseases, faculty of veterinary medicine, Damanhur University, Egypt.
I was working on:
- Koi herpesvirus disease in Nile tilapia
- The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in Nile tilapia farms due to the excessive use of antibiotics in tilapia farms now I'm doing my Ph.D. in aquatic molecular biology and Biotechnology lab (aquatic bioscience department, Tokyo University, Japan) with professor: Shuichi Asakawa

Demonstrator at the department of fish diseases, faculty of veterinary medicine, Damanhur University, Egypt from 2012-2014. Assistant lecturer in the same department from 2014 until now.

9. Share a turning point or defining moment in your science/career.
When I learned bioinformatics.
10. If you could be present for any "Eureka" moment in history (i.e. the moment some scientific discovery was made), which moment would you choose? Why?
Discovery of DNA structure by Watson and Crick because I think this was the starting point for understanding cell biology.
11. What advice would you give to someone considering a career in science/research?
Read, read and read before doing your research.
12. Where do you think the next scientific breakthroughs are going to occur?
Controlling human aging by maintaining stemness of body stem cells.
