Questions:

What is the research focus of your lab? 

My lab primarily concentrates on hematopoiesis, using zebrafish as the core model organism. Our main research directions include exploring novel hematopoietic regulators, and establishing disease models for blood disorders.  

 

How long have you been working with zebrafish? How long have you had your own lab? 

I began working with zebrafish eighteen years ago. I established my independent research laboratory in late 2011, which is approaching its 15th year. 

 

Where were you born/where did you grow up? 

I was born and raised in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, a city in eastern China. 

 

Tell us something about yourself in one sentence 

I love exploring new fields, taking on challenges and sharing knowledge and thoughts. 

 

Which of the current projects in your lab you are most excited about? 

I am most excited about our ongoing research on eosinophil heterogeneity. Based on our previous studies on granulocytic lineage development, we aim to investigate the distribution, behavioral characteristics, gene expression profiles and functional differences of eosinophils. This work will greatly deepen our understanding of the development and functions of these cells. Besides, our visualized models of thrombopoietic diseases hold great potential for new drug discovery. We have a drug candidate screened from zebrafish, which is currently preparing for clinical trials. If it succeeds, it will help patients recover platelet function more effectively after bone marrow transplantation. 

 

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in science/research? 

Stay curious, persevere through setbacks, and embrace collaboration. 

 

Which part of the PI job you enjoy the most? Why? 

What I enjoy most as a PI is communicating with both peers and students. Exchanging ideas with leading scientists from diverse fields lets me gain unique perspectives. I also cherish interactions with my students. Seeing them grow brings me great satisfaction, and our discussions often spark innovative ideas. 

 

What do you enjoy doing outside of work/lab? 

In my spare time, I enjoy family time, music and martial arts. 

 

What career would you have liked if you were not a scientist? 

If I were not a scientist, I would choose to be a professional athlete. If that doesn't work out, I'd become a coach or a sports promoter. I enjoy challenging my limits in sports and love sharing its charm to inspire more people to join in.
