Lions Eye Institute has an exciting new opportunity for a Research Assistant to join our Molecular Visual Science laboratory on a full-time basis. Generating morpholino zebrafish by way of embryonic microinjection and subsequence screening for a myopic phenotype using a combination of live imaging, optical coherence tomography, behavioural assays, and histological analysis.

Key responsibilities include:

  • General zebrafish husbandry and spawning
  • Collection of embryos and single cell morpholino microinjection
  • Live imaging and optical coherence tomography
  • RT-PCR
  • Sequencing and data analysis
  • Western blotting
  • Histology
  • General laboratory maintenance
  • Assisting students in the laboratory
  • Contribute to new or continuing research grant proposals to obtain funding for research activities.
  • Contribute to progress reports required by funding agencies


Essential Criteria:

  • Graduate degree in Biological Sciences or equivalent
  • Proficiency in standard molecular biology techniques (e.g., RT-PCR, Western Blotting, DNA and RNA isolation, quantitative Real Time PCR)
  • Good knowledge of histologic techniques
  • Attention to detail and ability to adhere to research protocols and guidelines
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills
  • Well-developed organisational skills and demonstrated ability to set priorities and to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, show initiative and work productively as part of a team
  • Flexibility in working hours and working across two sites (Nedlands and Shenton Park)

Desirable Criteria:

  • Honours or Masters in relevant field
  • Single-cell microinjection of embryos
  • Prior experience with zebrafish as an experimental model
