PhD Students & Postdocs - University of Montreal - Montreal, Quebec

Organization: CHU Sainte Justine Research Centre, University of Montreal
Date Posted: 05/28/2026
City: Montreal, Quebec
Country: Canada
Primary Category: Doctoral and Postdoctoral

Job title: Recruiting PhD Students and Postdocs

Position Overview:

The Ghersi Laboratory, embedded in the newly established CHU Sainte-Justine Research Center in Montreal, is recruiting PhD students and postdocs to join our research program focused on blood stem cell emergence during vertebrate development, using the zebrafish as a primary model system (up to 5 years, fully funded position).
We aim to understand how hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells are specified, diversified, and functionally integrated during development (Ghersi JJ. et al, 2023). Our work combines developmental biology, imaging, and single-cell approaches to dissect fundamental mechanisms of blood and vessel formation.
The selected candidate will join a collaborative and interactive environment where projects span stem cell biology, fundamental and pathological processes, and systems-level analysis of embryonic hematopoiesis.

Research Environment

Students will be based at the brand new Sainte-Justine Research Center, which provides access to a dynamic and rapidly growing research ecosystem in Montreal. The environment includes:

  • Advanced imaging platforms (confocal, light-sheet, and high-resolution microscopy)
  • Single-cell and genomic technologies
  • Opportunities for cross-disciplinary interaction with developmental biologists, clinicians, and computational scientists

Requirements:

  • Master and/or PhD in biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, genetics, or a related discipline
  • Solid experience with molecular and cellular biology techniques
  • Strong communication skills in English (written and spoken)
  • Genuine interest in hematopoiesis, stem cells, and embryonic development
  • Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment

Considered assets (not mandatory)

  • Experience with zebrafish or other vertebrate model systems
  • Background in confocal imaging
  • Familiarity with computational or genomics-based analyses

How to apply

Interested applicants should submit the following materials:

  • Cover letter describing research interests, experience, and career objectives
  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Contact information for two academic references

Applications should be sent to: joey.ghersi.hsj@ssss.gouv.qc.ca
