Associate Professor of Applied Biology

University of Trento (Trento, Italy)

I have served the zebrafish community and been working in promoting the use of the zebrafish in biomedical research since 2005, as Director of the Zebrafish Platform for the European Vascular Genetic Network (EVGN), EU-FP6 funded, till 2009. In 2009 I organized the 5th European Zebrafish Genetics and Development Meeting in Rome, and the 2nd Cancer and Immune Responses meeting (now the Zebrafish Disease Model meetings) in Spoleto. I served as Vice-Chair of the COST Action EufishBiomed BM804 from 2009 to 2012 and I am a founding member of the EuFishBiomed society. From 2011 to 2013 I was part of the Steering Committee of the Zebrafish PI meetings in Asilomar, and part of the scientific committees of the Zebrafish Disease Model meetings.

As a visiting professor at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (2012 – 2015), I contributed to the development of EZRC with fish lines and lectures at courses.

Since 2014, I have been a member of the Scientific Board of the Zebrafish Disease Model Society, where I serve as co-chair of the Travel and Awards Committee.

In 2017 I co-organized the 1st Italian Zebrafish Meeting (Padova) and I will organize the next European Zebrafish PI meeting in Trento (March 2018).

Since 2009 I have been invited as chair at Disease Model and Cancer sessions at international zebrafish meetings and I happily act as a reviewer for grants and manuscripts involving zebrafish research, trying to provide the best suggestions for the development of high quality research using the zebrafish model. I am associate editor of Frontier in Developmental and Cell Biology. Besides being a member of all three zebrafish societies (IZFS, EuFishBiomed, ZDMS), I am an active member of the European Cancer Research Association, and I participate to the European and Italian cancer meetings highlighting zebrafish cancer research to this community.

Candidate Statement:

I have been an active member of the zebrafish community since 2001, and I was honoured to be involved with many boards during the exciting times of founding the different societies that now ensure the continuous growth of a healthy community of zebrafish scientists. One of my goals is to favour the integration among the different zebrafish societies (communication, collaboration, organization, services to the members and so on) and promote the role of European Zebrafish Science in the international arena through reinforcement of their excellence and recognition of their regional needs.

I would like to encourage the involvement of young European scientists in the zebrafish societies by creating a trustful atmosphere and a forum for their voices.

I would like to re-launch the value of international co-operation and funding for the benefit of science and work together with the other members of IZFS to promote projects of transcontinental platforms dedicated to zebrafish that will involve funding agencies of different countries. One of the goals of my mandate, if elected, will be to promote the visibility of zebrafish research also through attractive, representative and fully functional web instruments.
